5 Tips to Help Spot Phishing Scams

Phishing is a prevalent and dangerous type of scam. Hackers attempt to deceive individuals into sharing personal information, which can lead to compromised accounts, stolen money, or identity theft.

Traditionally, these fraudulent messages come to you via email; but phishing can also happen over the phone, through text, and over direct messages.

Here are 5 ways you can spot and avoid phishing scams:

1. Watch out for grammar mistakes, foreign spellings, and any other unusual elements in the message.

2. Be cautious of suspicious urgency and scare tactics. Phishers often use panic-inducing tactics to prompt swift action without consideration.

3. Don’t click on links or attachments. Hover your mouse over the link to see the real destination address (which might differ from what's displayed).

4. Verify the website before entering any information. Send sensitive information to trusted sources only through encrypted channels, and ensure the validity of payments before proceeding.

5. If you're unsure, reach out directly to the sender of the message.
